Safe and Reliable Spatio-temporal Model for Roundabouts and Road Intersections using Vehicular Communication System


A high majority of road traffic incidents occur at roundabouts and road intersections as per

annual incident reports. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are capable of reducing this high number of road traffic incidents and will ease traffic congestion. Vehicle to Anything (V2X) communication techniques, such as Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I), assist by sharing security and safety information including real-time location, speed and trajectory. Several innovative approaches for modelling the entering/exiting of road intersections and roundabouts have been designed based on the Global Positioning System (GPS). However, in urban environments the reliability of GPS is low resulting in a high demand for ITS’s. This study proposes a novel spatio-temporal intersection management protocol, defining a confidence circle based on GPS positioning which can be shared throughout the vehicular network. The results from the simulated model show a clear improvement in both road safety and traffic efficiency.
